After traveling in an expedition to the West in 1859 under the direction of Colonel Frederick Lander, Bierstadt completed the painting in 1863. The monumental landscape was bought by railroad entrepreneur James McHenry for $25,000, and can now be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The painting popularly thematized the idea of nationalism, manifest destiny and the untamed wild Western spirit.
