A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF SOPHIA WISDOM OF GOD WITH SAINTS, DATED 1893. A large and impressive presentation or commemorative icon. The main central image depicts a beautiful and complex rendering of Wisdom (an aspect of Christ before the creation) as a winged angelic figure with flame red face and seated on a throne. Above Wisdom (Greek – Sophia) is Christ and still higher a blue star-filled scroll symbolizing the heavens upon which God the Father rests flanked by angels. To the immediate left of Wisdom is the Mother of God and the Apostle St. John. On the right St. John the Forerunner holds a scroll which begins "Repent ye: for the Kingdom…" (Matthew 3:2) and he delivers a blessing in the manner preferred by the "Old Believers". To his right is St. John Chrysostom. The lower margin of the icon displays eight selected Saints. They are identified by accompanying inscriptions. From left to right they are the Venerable Martyr Zinoida, the Holy Martyr Vassa, the Venerable Makariy of Egypt, the Bishop Saint James, the Archbishop John, Saint Alexandra, the Holy Martyr Agatha and the Holy Martyr Tatiana. The central lower margin with Old Slavonic gilt inscription reading, "The year of the world 7401 (1893), month of November, 10th day, from the Society of Woodcutters in commemoration of the building of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker". 28 inches x 22 inches (71 x 56 cm).
