Lot 98
A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE BLESSED SILENCE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY. Here Christ is depicted as an angel with an eight-pointed "glory" imposed on the halo, the eighth point being hidden by the head. The seven points symbolize the six days of creation and the day on which God rested. The eighth point represents the Day of Eternity. This type represents Christ as the word in Eternity, and iconographically it is usually associated with the creation and the plan of salvation ordained from eternity. The angel imagery derives from Isaiah 9:5 considered by Orthodoxy as referring to Christ calling him the messenger (Greek-angel) of Great Counsel. The other biblical texts usually associated with this type are: Isaiah 42:2: "He shall not cry, not lift up his voice to be heard in the street", and Isaiah 53:7. "He was oppressed, and afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth, he is brought as a lamb to slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opens not his mouth." 24.5 inches x 20.6 inches (62.5 x 52.4 cm).
