AN UNIQUE & INTERESTING GREEK ICON OF ST. LUKE PRESENTING AN ICON TO THE MOTHER OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. At center St. Luke, the patron of artists and by tradition the first to paint an icon of the Virgin and Child, is shown here presenting the Virgin an icon inscribed with the Greek title, the Mother of God of Compassion and overlaid with an applied silver riza. The main image within a trompe l’oeil frame with crown finial and supported by angels and draped with floral garlands. 15.6 inches x 13.75 inches (39.7 x 35 cm).
