A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON: Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk, circa 1890. Portrayed
here as a Bishop, he delivers a blessing. An icon of the Mother of God at
top left. Overlaid with a spectacular silver-gilt repoussé and engraved
riza. The corners and sides with enamel plaques. His mitre in guilloche
enamel and set with paste stones. Riza with Cyrillic makers mark of
Khebnikov under the Imperial Warrant, Moscow and dated 1888. Tikhon was
proclaimed a Saint in 1861. He is celebrated on Aug. 26th (Aug. 13 old
calendar). Size 10.5"x8.5" (26.7 cm x 21.5 cm). Estimate $4,000-$6,000 |
