131 A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON: The Diesis, circa 1780. At center Christ is enthroned as "The Lord Almighty". He delivers a blessing and holds the Gospels open to Matthew 11:28. On the left and right the Mother of God and John the Forerunner intercede on behalf of humanity, beseeching Him for mercy. Mary holds a scroll which begins "Ruler Most Gracious..." and John holds a scroll which begins "Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand...". Two angels (usually viewed as Michael and Gabriel) stand behind the throne. The large size and panel construction would suggest that the offered lot was once the central section of an iconostasis in a private chapel. 25.5"x34.5" (65cm x 88cm). Estimate $4,000-$6,000
132 A RUSSIAN ICON: St. John the Forerunner (Baptist), circa 1700. 12"x10.5" (31cm x 27cm). Estimate $2,000-$2,500
