$1,500-$2,000Labouchere was a descendent of a Huguenot family, which
immigrated to Holland and became engaged in banking and shipping. While his
father pressed him into the family business, which eventually took young
Pierre to America as a bank manager and partner, in the end his fidelity to
the faith of his ancestors lead him to devote his life painting historical
works relating to the reformation and in particular, the life of Luther. He
was active in the French Protestantism movement contributing many articles
to their publications as well as illustrating numerous works. In 1846, he
received a 2nd class medal at the Paris Salon for his painting of Luther
translating the Bible with Melancthon, Pomeranus and Cruciger. It is
possible the offered lot is a smaller version of this work done by the
artist for an admiring supporter or Protestant clergy member. Provenance:
