AN IMPORTANT RUSSIAN ICON: Saint John Chrysostum, 16th century. Rendered on a moss green field, John holds the Gospels and is turned inward towards Christ in an attitude of prayer. His sakkos is ornately embroidered with crosses and embellished with gemstones. His white stole with a pattern of crosses. The large size and shape of the offered lot would suggest it was once installed in the Deisis tier of an iconostasis. Because of his eloquent oratory skills, St. John was given the name "Golden-Mouth" the same title found on this icon (upper right). The usual Orthodox Sunday liturgy is the Liturgy of John Chrysostum. A very fine specimen. 33.75 inches x 13.6 inches (85.7 cm x 34.6 cm). Estimate $25,000-$35,000 |

A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON of St. John the Forerunner, circa 1600. Here John is seen turned toward Christ in an attitude of prayer and supplication. His flowing hair and beard traditionally rendered. His garments highlighted in white. The condensed and abbreviated inscription identifies him as Svyatuiy Ioann Predtecha - "Holy John the Forerunner". The size and shape of this icon would indicate that it was once part of the Deisis tier of an iconostasis, second out on the right side from the central image of Christ. Known in Western Christianity as John the Baptist, in Eastern Orthodoxy he is called Forerunner, as he was the forerunner of Christ's earthly ministry. 35.75 inches x 14.5 inches (90.5 cm x 37 cm).
