A FINE RUSSIAN ICON: The Dormition, 18th century. Here Christ stands behind the recumbent Mother of God and receives her soul, represented as an infant. The Apostles, Saints and angels gather around her. A fanatical Jewish priest attempts to push her off the bier and has his hands cut off by a sword-wielding angel. Painted with exceptional detail, probably a Palekh artist. 14 inches x 11.5 inches (35.5 cm x 29.5 cm). Estimate $3,500-$5,000 |

A FINE RUSSIAN ICON: The Extended Deisis, circa 1650. Here Christ is enthroned as the "Lord Almighty". To the far left the Mother of God, and St. John the Baptist (far right) intercede on behalf of humanity, beseeching him for mercy. In this example additional figures have been added "extending" the scene. They include the Archangel Gabriel and Michael. Saints Peter and Paul, Saints Zosima and Savattiy, plus additional saints.
