A FINE RUSSIAN ICON: The Dormition with Selected Saints, first half of the 19th century. The Dormition image at top rendered in miniature with excruciating detail of magnifying glass quality. Below from left to right are the Saints Theodore, the Holy Prophet Nahum and the Holy Martyr Neonila. Overlaid with a repousse and chased silver riza with indistinguishable marks. A SIGNED & DATED RUSSIAN ICON: St. Alexis Metropolitan of Moscow, 1874. Exquisitely painted on an ornately incised gilt ground. Executed in miniature with single hair brush detail and extensive gold highlighting (chrysography). Signed on lower margin in Russian. This icon was painted in the Sergi Lavra Icon workshop by master iconographer Ivan Malsheva in the year 1874. Fantastic! 8.6 inches x 7 inches (22 cm x 17.7 cm). Estimate $2,000-$3,000 |
