A RUSSIAN ICON: O VESPYETAYA MATI, 19th century, probably Nevyansk region. Finely painted on a gilt ground, the head covering of the Virgin is edged with a wide band containing, in Slavonic lettering, Kontakion Thirteen from the Akathist Canon: "O All-Hymned Mother, bearer of the holiest of holies Word, accept what we offer..." The title of this image inscribed above the Virgin's right shoulder. The borders with the Archangel Mikhail, St. Onufriuos, St. Paissy, and St. Agatha. In a fine original state of preservation. 15.75 inches x 13.75 inches (40 cm x 35 cm). Estimate $1,500-$2,000
