A RUSSIAN ICON: St. John Chrysostum, 18th century. John holds an ornately decorated book of Gospels and delivers a blessing. His ornate outer robe (sakkos) is also ornately decorated with gold and gemstones. St. John was known for his eloquent oratory skills and was thus given the name "Golden-mouthed". The usual Orthodox Sunday liturgy is the Liturgy of John Chrysostum. This icon appears to have been transferred at a later date into a new wood panel. A common practice utilized to extend the life of an icon whose edges or borders may have been excessively worn. 10.75 inches x 5.25 inches (27.4 cm x 13 cm). Estimate $800-$1,200 |
