GERMAN SCHOOL (19th century), Saint Alphonsus Liguori—circa 1830’s, Oil on oak panel, Unsigned, 12.5 inches x 9 inches (32 x 23 cm), Estimate $400-$700, St. Alphonsus Liguori is a Doctor of the Church, founder of the Congregation of the Holy Redeemer (Redemptionists).  A musician, painter, poet and author, he is perhaps best known for his contribution to the moral theology.  He was canonized in 1831, about the period of this painting.  He is patron of confessors, theologians, moralists and vocations.
