POPE PIUS IX RELATED HAND ILLUMINATED VELLUM SHEET Exquisitely rendered in miniature utilizing single hairbrush technique and of magnifying glass quality . At top St. Peter's Basilica, below an image of the Immaculate Conception. Further still illuminated 'Pio IX Orbis Catholicus' and in the background architectural renderings representative of the Universal Catholic Church through history. At the base, the coat of arms of Pope Pius IX. Artist signed H. (Hercule) Catenacci (Italian 1816-1884) and dated 1867. Contained in a gilt decorated leather frame. Sheet size 10.75 inches x 8.5 inches (27.5 cm x 21.5 cm). It is Pope Pius IX who declared the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception., most likely the genesis of this exceptional illuminated vellum sheet. No doubt acquired by a wealthy 19th century pilgrim to Rome. Estimate $1,000-$1,500
