Alexander Glazunov was born in the village of Terehovo near Palekh northeast of Moscow. He graduated from the Moscow Archeological Institute in 1910 and from that time forward operated a very successful icon painting studio in Moscow where he employed a number of Palekh trained iconographers. Like many of his contemporaries such as noted iconographers Chirikov, Gurianov and Emelianov, Glazunov was also a noted art historian and collector of icons. Like most iconographers after the revolution Glazunov was forced to transition into miniature lacquerware painting and apparently portraiture as attested to the offered lot as well as a similar portrait on lacquer of Soviet statesman Anastas Mikoyan also dated 1938 and which was sold at Bonham’s Auctioneers, San Francisco, January 13, 2008, lot 1039.
