AN INTERESTING AND UNIQUE PAINTED PRESENTATION CIGARETTE CASE TO SOVIET MILITARY COMMANDER VASILY GREGORYEVICH TERENTIEV (1899-1957), DATED 1942. The cover of the hinged lid painted with a charging group of Soviet Calvary troops with a burning city in the background and trampling beneath them a German helmet. In the upper right corner is inscribed in gold “Charge Westward Red Riders” and artist signed lower left A. Polchin. The sides decorated in bands of finely painted gold scrolling foliage and the verso inscribed in gold, “On the anniversary of the war of the Fatherland of the Soviet People against the German aggressors, 22 June 1942 to Commander of the 108th Infantry Division Vasily Gregoryevich Terentiev. Length 4.25 inches (11.5 cm).

Terentiev eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant General, but was arrested in 1947 in the infamous Trophy Case, sentenced to 25 years he was eventually released after the death of Stalin and arrest of Berea in 1953.
