It was quite common to salvage the main image of an icon whose borders had deteriorated over the years. This is particularly true for personal devotional family icons which were often passed on through many generations. Oftentimes, they were re-set and incorporated into a new panel and with newly painted backgrounds and borders. Other times, such as in the offered lot, only the main image was retained.
