AN EXQUISITE AND UNIQUE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE TENDERNESS MOTHER OF GOD, 1896-1905. At center the Mother of God holding the infant Christ in a tender (umeliene) cheek-to-cheek embrace. Executed in high relief repoussé gilded silver, their haloes in white champlevé enameled in simulated mosaic on a semi-transparent turquoise blue enamel field. The outer border of the frame set with stylized rosettes in each corner and the borders enameled in scrolling foliage on a purple translucent enamel ground. The upper border surmounted by a row of ogee-shaped arches with floral elements on a cream enameled field. The verso with finely finished wood backing incorporating a precision made recessed strut support. Hallmarked Kostroma, circa 1899-1905, Cyrillic maker's mark Kh.M. and 84 silver standard. Spectacular! 6.5 inches x 4.9 inches (16.5 x 12.5 cm).

The offered icon is based on the life-size icon of the Virgin and Child painted by Viktor Vasnetsov (1848-1926) for the Cathedral of Saint Vladimir in Kiev, Ukraine, completed in 1896 and can be found immediately to the left of the Royal Doors of the iconostasis.
