Lot 338
A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE ICON OF SAINT JOHN THE GOLDEN MOUTH, ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF VASILY PESHEKHONOV, CIRCA 1860. The half length image depicting St. John in ornate bouillon embroidered bishop's robes, he delivers a blessing with his right hand and holds a decorative book of gospels embellished with silver-gilt plaques decorated with pearls and gemstones, a typical hallmark of the Peshekhonov Workshop. The gilded background and borders intricately incised with strapwork, similar to other known Peshekhonov examples, and his name rendered in gold within blue rectangular cartouches. The size and unique shape of the panel would suggest this icon was once held in an Iconostasis, likely from a private chapel. 36.75 inches x 20.75 inches (93.3 x 52.6 cm).
Estimate:
$8,000 - 12,000
