Lot 339
A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE ICON OF SAINT BARBARA, ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF VASILY PESHEKHONOV, CIRCA 1860. The half length image depicting St. Barbara wearing royal robes and a crown, embellished with pearls and gemstones and with gilt shading, all typical Peshekhonov hallmarks. She holds a martyrs cross with her right hand and with her left a scroll upon which is inscribed with a variation on Luke 23:42, the words of the repentant thief "Remember us Lord when you come into your kingdom." Her name is inscribed in gilt lettering within blue rectangle cartouches and identify her as the Holy Great Martyr Barbara. The gilded background and borders intricately incised with strapwork, similar to other known Peshekhonov examples, the same as the previous lot and which was also probably once part of the same Iconostasis. 36.75 inches x 20.75 inches (93.3 x 52.6 cm).
Estimate:
$8,000 - 12,000
