AN EXCEPTIONAL SIGNED AND DATED RUSSIAN ICON OF METROPOLITAN ST. ALEXIS, IVAN MALSHEV, 1874. Exquisitely painted on an ornately incised gilt ground. The Saint is shown standing half length, richly dressed holding an ornate book of gospels and delivering a blessing. The gilded background intricately incised with scrolling floral ornaments and strapwork. Signed on lower margin in Russian: This icon was painted in the Sergi Lavra Icon workshop by master iconographer Ivan Malyshev in the year 1874. Fantastic! 8.6 inches x 7 inches (22 cm x 17.7 cm).
