A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DEISIS WITH SAINTS, CIRCA 1780. At top center the Deisis with Christ enthroned at center and flanked by the Virgin and John the Forerunner, behind them the Archangels Mikhail and Gabriel. Christ delivers a blessing and holds an open book of Gospels minutely inscribed with the text of Matthew 11:28. Directly beneath is the Guardian Angel surrounded by a gathering of 16 saints. From top to bottom left to right they are; St. Nicholas, St. John the Warrior, St. Sergiy of Radonezh, St. Maron, St. John, Priest-Martyr Antipas, Priest Martyr Kharlampiy, St. John the Apostle, the Abbess St. Paraskeva of Rzhevsk, St. Photinia, Virgin Martyr St. Alexandra, the Righteous Anna, St. Maria of Egypt, the Great Martyr Ekaterina, Barbara and Paraskeva. The borders ornately decorated with scrolling foliage. The entire image overlaid with a very heavy repoussé and chased silver –gilt riza, apparently unmarked. In an excellent state of preservation. 9.3 inches x 7.75 inches (23.2 x 19.5 cm). Illustrated both covered and uncovered.
