A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE SMOLENSK MOTHER OF GOD, AROUND 1800. Finely painted following the traditional old canons. In this Odigetria (Greek-way shower) type, the Virgin guides the viewer to the way of salvation- her son Christ Jesus. The upper left and right corners inscribed with the Greek abbreviated title of Mother of God, and above the head of Christ IC XC for Isus Khristos. Both the Christ child’s garments and that of His mother's finely highlighted in chrysography. In a most excellent state of preservation. The image overlaid with a repoussé and chased silver riza with gilded silver halo. Hallmarked St. Petersburg, 84 silver standard, dated 1817 and with Cyrillic maker's mark EP. 7.25 inches x 6.25 inches (18.5 x 16 cm). Illustrated both covered and uncovered.
