Firstly a product of the Dusseldorf Academy, Ittenbach later aligned himself with the Nazarene movement, a group of 19th century German painters who aimed to revive honesty and spirituality in art. He was deeply religious and regularly declined commissions for the ever popular mythological or pagan subjects. Prior to starting a painting Ittenbach would often seek the graces of the sacraments of confession and Holy Communion. As seen in the offered lot, his paintings are masterfully rendered with exceptional detail and modeling and with extensive use of glazing resulting in an almost three dimensional quality.
