Jan Styka was one of Poland’s most illustrious citizens and artists. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with a gold medal. While he is most well-known for large historical paintings and religious scenes such as the offered lot, he also painted portraits of well-known personalities of his time. He produced a series of paintings for fellow Polish and Nobel Prize recipient Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel Quo Vadis. He is also the author of the famous mural of The Crucifixion housed in its own amphitheater, Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. He is also the father of noted painters Adam Styka (1890-1959) and Thadeus Styka (1889-1954).
The offered painting depicts the 17th century French nun and mystic Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, who promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in its modern form. The smoke rising from the censer in the foreground represents prayers rising to heaven.
