A LARGE AND IMPORTANT NORTH RUSSIAN CARVED AND POLYCHROME WOOD FIGURAL SKOPKAR, VOLOGDA PROVINCE, 18TH or 19TH CENTURY. Carved from a single piece of wood in the form of a resting bird, the prow carved as a head with beak and the handle in the form of spread tail feathers. The bowl deeply carved and resting on a slightly raised circular ring base and overall polychromed in red ochre, the rim banded in scrolling foliage and the handle similarly decorated; the breast with large star decorated circle medallion. Length 29 inches (73.5 cm), width 15 inches (38.4 cm).

Also, see the exhibition catalog of Folk Art of the Soviet Union- Reflection of a Rich Cultural Diversity of the Fifteen Republics, Mingei International Museum, San Diego, CA, 1989, the front cover which depicts a nearly identical example dated to the 18th century and attributed to the Vologda Province.
