A PAIR OF NORTH RUSSIAN CARVED WOOD KOVSHI, 18TH/19TH CENTURY. Both carved with raised prow and with figural handles. One with old repair. Length 8 inches (20.5 cm) and 7.75 inches (19.5 cm).

See L. Zhuravleva, "Carved and Painted Woodwork by Russian Craftsmen at the Smolensk Museum of Art History and Architecture", Sovietskaya Rossia Publishers, Moscow, 1985, pp.110, plates 144 and 146 which illustrate two very similar specimens dated to the 18th century and attributed to the Vologda Province.

Such ladles are often referred to as kovshi-nalivka, so called because they were used to serve the popular 18th century alcoholic drink called nalivka, made from ripened berries or fruits. The name comes from the adjective "nalivnoy", meaning ripened, beautiful and pure.
