The tradition of wooden toy and wooden handicraft (kustar) production in the settlement around the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra (Sergiev Posad) northeast of Moscow dates back to the 18th century and reached its peak of notoriety at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. In the early Soviet period, the time from which these examples were produced, very little changed from those produced in the late Imperial period. However, like wooden handicrafts of every generation, because they were used and played with and in particular if the materials were less resilient to the vagaries of time, few good examples from this period exist.
