It was the aspiration of every good Russian Orthodox Christian to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and if possible, via Mount Athos. One of the most popular pilgrim souvenirs acquired and brought back from Palestine was icons, such as the offered lot, carved from mother of pearl. Subsequently, these types of icons are found throughout Russia and old Russian family collections.
