A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD OF THE PASSION, MSTERA, CIRCA 1900. Finely painted in the miniature technique with subtle shading, extensive use of chrysography and exceptional detailing throughout. Here the Mother of God holds the infant Christ who looks upward as angels of the Lord descend holding implements of the Passion. The background and halo decorated in gilt scrolling foliage on a moss green ground, the borders rendered with ornate strapwork interspersed with blossoming flowers. 12.3 inches x 10.5 inches (31.2 x 26.3 cm).
