A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOLCHENSKOY MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1900.  Finely painted within an arched reserve on an incised gilt ground, the Virgin holds the infant Christ who looks towards the Apostle Saint James shown at left and in her arms she also cradles a ladder and a model of a monastery. The borders ornately incised and painted to simulate cloisonné enameling. The title for the icon inscribed at center on lower margin, "The Molchenskaya Most Holy Mother of God." The verso with dedicatory inscription dated 1889. A rarely encountered subject. 10.5 x 8.75 inches (26.5 x 22 cm).
