AN ITALIAN EBONY AND INLAID IVORY FRAME AND ENGRAVED PLAQUE, DATED 1879. At center held within a rectangular reserve, a finely scrimshawed ivory plaque depicting Saint Francis of Assisi signed with monogram and dated 1879 and surrounded with a border of engraved inlaid ivory depicting on the sides birds and animals amidst scrolling foliage and flowers. The corners set with winged cherub heads and immediately above the image of St. Francis the inlaid symbol of St. Francis’ conformity with Christ - both his and the arm of Christ crossed beneath a crucifix. Below the image of Francis, inlaid and engraved ivory birds holding a banner aloft inscribed 4th of October 1879 (October 4th being the Feast Day of St. Francis). Beneath the overhanging arched pediment at top a row of inlaid garlands interspersed with doves and above a coat of arms displaying fleur-de-lis and in French inscribed Je N'oublie Jamais and below in Latin Seraphice Francisce Ora Pro Nobis – Saraphic Francis Pray for Us. The verso with inlaid ivory plaque inscribed M. Zuccareeli, ROMA VIA LAURINA 24 and with hinged strut stand. Height 9.5 inches (24cm) width 6.5 inches (16.5cm).
