AN INTERESTING AND UNIQUE RUSSIAN ICON COMMEMORATING THE LIBERATION OF SERFDOM OF THE PEASANT SERF GERASIM LOSKUTOV IN 1861. At center within an arched reserve, Christ looks down and delivers a blessing to the gathering of saints below, each finely painted and identified by an inscription above their halo as, The Venerable Maria, St. Basil the Great, the Holy Princess Olga, the Venerable Elizabeth, the Holy Martyr Paraskeva, the Venerable Evdokia, the Holy Peter Metropolitan of Moscow and the Holy Gerasim. On the left border, the Holy Great Prince Alexander Nevsky, and on the right, the Holy Mary Magdalene. The lower cartouche painted with an inscription reading "This icon was created in remembrance of the Liberation from Serfdom on the 19th of February of the year 1861, of the peasant/serf Gerasim Grigoriev Loskutov under Emperor Alexander II." The entire image overlaid with a silver plated repoussé riza with engraved dedicatory plaque on lower margin repeating the same inscription as painted on the icon. 12.5 inches x 11 inches (31.5 x 27.5 cm).
Estimate:  $2,000 - 3,000   € 1,400 - 2,100
Price Realized: $6,250.00

This icon reflects the historical event of the Imperial "Emancipation Manifesto" issued on the 19th of February, 1861 by Tsar Alexander II. This manifesto freed serfs on private estates and in domestic households, thereby permitting them to own property and businesses and to marry without asking consent. It is very likely that the border saints represent the name saints of the landlords (husband and wife) and that the saints depicted on the icon itself represent the name saints of the liberated serf (Gerasim Grigoriev Loskutov), his wife and their children.
