A RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT JOHN THE FORERUNNER WITH LIFE SCENES, PROBABLY PALEKH, 1893. At center, a large full standing figure of Saint John rendered with wings holding a diskos containing the infant Christ, and also holding a scroll with text from John 1:29, "Behold the Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world." The margins with various scenes from his life, including his birth, being led into the wilderness, his beheading and the discovery of his head. At top center, God the Father atop Palekh style clouds, delivers a blessing. The painted surface in original untouched condition and retaining the original varnish coat. The entire icon overlaid with a lovely silver repoussé and chased riza. Hallmarked Moscow, dated 1893, Cyrillic maker's mark AP, probably for Andrei Postnikov and 84 silver standard. 12.5 inches x 10.75 inches (32 x 27 cm).
