A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE HOLY VISAGE, ST. PETERSBURG, CIRCA 1840. Realistically painted, here the face of Christ is shown as it was miraculously transferred to a napkin. Overlaid with a silver repoussé and engraved riza, repeating the image of the napkin shown on the painted surface. Hallmarked St. Petersburg, dated 1842, Cyrillic maker's mark FI for Fedot Ilin (act. 1837-1857) and 84 silver standard. 10.5 inches x 8.75 inches (27 x 22 cm).
