A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL, YAROSLAVL, CIRCA 1700. Here Michael is depicted as an armor clad winged warrior holding a fiery sword atop stylized clouds within an arched reserve. At top center, the Holy Visage, and the upper margin inscribed in gilt "Archangel Michael." The wings and armor rendered in gilt and the panel constructed with double raised borders (kovcheg), typical of icons from this period. 12.25 inches x 10.75 inches (31 x 27.5 cm).
