A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE EVANGELIST SAINT MATTHEW, CIRCA 1800. Finely executed on an oval panel with kovcheg and gilt border, Matthew is shown inside a room as he writes his gospel, the first in the New Testament. The book in his hands is inscribed with the text from the opening of his gospel "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ...". At the top is Matthew's symbol, a winged man. No doubt once part of a four set group of icons which adorned the Royal Doors in a small chapel. 10.5 inches x 7.25 inches (26.6 x 18.3 cm).
