Lot 88
A SCARCE RUSSIAN ICON OF MID-PENTECOST, 19TH CENTURY IN THE 16TH CENTURY STYLE. This icon type is commonly called Prepolovenie, which literally means "The Middle," being the period between Easter and the day of Pentecost. The Wednesday of the fourth week after Easter became associated in the Church with Christ teaching in the temple as an adult or as in the offered lot, sitting among the learned doctors as a 12 year old boy (Luke 2:41-52). Here, the boy Christ is surrounded by learned men in the temple. They are astonished by the understanding and wisdom of the strange youngster in their midst. At upper right are Joseph and Mary who have just found their missing son. 14 inches x 12.5 inches (35 x 31 cm).
