A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE POKROV MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1800. A large and complex rendering, on the top tier at center the crowned Mother of God with outstretched arms holding her protecting veil (Pokrov) over the gathering below. On either side, she is flanked by a gathering of Saints, each identified with the name inscribed in their halo. Immediately behind her, a gathering of the Archangels, and above, Christ in majesty. In the lower margin at right, Andrew points out the vision of Mary to Epiphanius. At center, the Melodist Romanos, and to the left, the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Emperor and Empress. 21 inches x 17.6 inches (53.5 x 45 cm).
