A WILLIAM F. CODY (BUFFALO BILL) AND DR. FRANK POWELL (WHITE BEAVER) OFFICE SAFE, CIRCA 1884. "The Halls" Safe and Lock company, Cincinnati & Chicago patented safe with hand painted scenic exterior inscribed "Cody" on the left door above a hand painted scene of Buffalo Bill and captioned "Buffalo Bill", flanking the right door inscribed "Powell" above a hand painted scene of Dr. Powell trading with Native American Indians and captioned "White Beaver". The door additionally decorated with a painted buffalo's head and a white beaver among scrolling motifs and patterns with each exterior panel trimmed in gold, black and red striping. The doors opening to reveal two secondary locking doors and a well appointed interior with a hand painted mountainous stream scene, the maker's name and floral bouquets, opening to reveal a maple pigeon holed compartment with birdseye maple drawer fronts. Lot is accompanied by several period newspaper reprints from 1938 and again in 1973 in which the safe is pictured and the history described as being purchased in 1884 for use in Cody and Powell's partnership manufacturing cough cream and wonder worker medicines, and further describing the later businesses that would occupy the building in which the safe resided. Height 46 inches, width 36 inches, depth 32 inches.
