Lot 117
A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE GUARDIAN ANGEL AND ST. NATALIA, PALEKH, CIRCA 1880. On the left a finely painted image of the Guardian Angel holding a sword and eight-sided cross. On the right a similarly rendered image of the Holy Martyr Natalia. Between and above them an image of the Holy Visage modeled after the well-known painting by noted German Nazarene artist Franz Ittenbach’s Veil of Veronica which was widely disseminated in print form by the end of the 19th century. Indeed the very same image in print form was part of the archive collection gathered from the workshop of the well known Palekh icon painter L. Bakanov* Both figures are exceedingly well painted with great detail and exhibit characteristics of both the Palekh and Mstera style, such as color tinted and gilt-shaded haloes as well as stippled foreground. Verso faintly inscribed in Cyrilic 'N.S.S.-June 1880'. Such icons were often given as gifts at ones baptism-perhaps in this case for Natalia Sergeyevna Sheremetyevskaya (born June 1880) and who would go on to marry Grand Duke Michael 'Mischa' Alexandrovich Romanov. 12.25 inches x 10.25 inches (31cm x 26.2cm).
