A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE BEHEADING OF JOHN THE BAPTIST, PALEKH, 19TH CENTURY. This icon illustrates the Gospel account of the death of John the Baptist as recounted in Mark 6: 17-29 and Matthew 14: 1-12. In the upper left John is seen praying while in prison, depicted here as a red walled structure. At lower left two overlapping images, John standing as he is about to be beheaded and his headless body on the ground. At center the executioner presents the head to Salome upon a salver. At lower right Salome presents the head to her mother Herodias and at upper right Herodias and Herod at court with the head of John. At top center is God the Father who holds an orb, delivers a blessing and whose head is encircled with the distinct eight pointed star or glory (slava) signifying the Day of Eternity. The inner border (kovcheg) ornamented with scrolling foliage. The upper border with a highly stylized and condensed inscription which reads USEKNOVENIE GALVUI SVYATAGO PROROKA IOANNA PREDTECHA-The Cutting Off of the Head of The Holy Prophet John the Forerunner. 14 inches x 12.25 inches (35.5cm x 31cm).
