A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE BOGOLIUBSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. Here the Mother of God is depicted turned in an attitude of prayer before her son Jesus Christ who delivers a blessing from the heavens at upper right. She holds a scroll which begins, 'Ruler most gracious, Lord Jesus Christ, my son and my God, hear the prayer of your Mother for she prays for the world.' At the center of the lower margin a rectangular cartouche is inscribed, 'This is the image of the appearance of the Most Holy Mother of God to the holy and great prince Andrei Georgievich in the year 1155, June, the 18th day on the same place where now is too be seen the white stone church of the Most Holy Mother of God founded by the true-believing prince Andrei Georgievich Bogoliubsky from which the Bogoliubov Monastery takes its name.' The Bogolyubovsky Monastery is illustrated in the background. 13.75 inches x 11.6 inches (35cm x 30cm).
