A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD, JOY TO ALL WHO SUFFER, 19TH CENTURY. In this 'Joy of All Who Suffer' type the crowned Mother of God stands in the center. She holds the infant Christ on her left arm and a sceptre in her outstretched right hand. Suffering humans are gathered on both sides of her, with angels among them. Open scrolls bear the petition of the people: 'O Most Holy Lady, Mistress, Mother of God, higher than all angels and archangels, and more honorable than all creatures, you are the help of the injured, hope of the weak, intercessor of the poor, consolation of the sorrowing, feeder of the hungry, clother of the naked, healer of the ill, salvation of sinners, aid and defense of all Christians!' (O, Presvyataya Gospozhe Vladuichitse Bogoroditse, vuisshi esi vsyekh angel i arkhangel i vseya tvari chestiyeishi. Pomoshchnitsa esi obidimuikh, nenadyei-ushchikhsya nadyeyanie, ubogikh zastupnitsa, pechalnuikh ytyeshenie, alchushchikh kormitelnitsa, nagikh odyeyanie, bolnuikh istsyelenie, gryeshnuikh spasenie, khristian vsyekh pomozhenie i zastuplenie). In this example an additional row of saints have been added beneath the descending Angels of the Lord in the upper left and right corners. The saints are The Venerable Zosimas, Holy Antipias, Venerable Sergiy Radonezh and the Venerable Savatii. The border with the Guardian Angel and with family saints Katherine, the Prophetess Anna and Florus. The top central border with God the Father and the upper margin with gilt inscription identifying the subject as the Joy to All Who Suffer Mother of God. 14.25 inches x 12.25 inches (36 x 31 cm).
