A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE VLADIMIR MOTHER OF GOD, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1800. The Vladimir icon is perhaps the most famous miracle working icon known in Russia. In this finely painted example, the infant Christ and his mother are depicted in a tender cheek-to-cheek embrace. Their garments are beautifully illuminated with extensive chrysography and faux jewels. Similarly decorated is the crown which rests atop the Virgin’s halo. The high quality of painting exhibited in the faces as well as the garments and border saints suggest that this icon was produced by a master iconographer, and probably Palekh trained. On the left border is depicted the Holy Protomartyr and Archdeacon Stephen holding a stone, the implement of his martyrdom (Acts 7:58) and on the right border the female Saint Bassa. The entire image is overlaid with an ornate repoussed silvered metal riza with an attached gilded metal halo. Spectacular! 14.1 inches x 12.24 inches (36cm x 30.5cm).
Estimate:  $1,200 - 1,800   € 900 - 1,350
