A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DESCENT INTO HADES, 19TH CENTURY. At lower right is the empty tomb (sarcophagus) displaying the burial shroud. Christ is shown grasping the hand of Adam as Eve kneels before him while various other figures, such as Noah (holding a model ark) walk forth from bondage (stepping out of the jaws of the great red monster at lower left) and making their way upwards to the gates of heaven guarded by a red six-winged Seraph illustrated at upper right. The borders with four family saints including The Holy Hieromartyr Pancratius Bishop of Tauromeny (upper left) and the Holy Martyr Paraskeva (lower left).
