A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD OF UNEXPECTED JOY, 19TH CENTURY. This interesting Mother of God type about the joy of Divine forgiveness depicts an interior scene in which a man kneels before a large icon of the Mother of God, who holds the child Jesus who bears the wounds of the crucifixion. The tale illustrated is about a man (left) who led a sinful life but was nevertheless devoted to the Mother of God and daily venerated her icon with the words of the of the Archangel Gabriel, 'Hail Mary, full of grace.' One day the man noticed that the Mother of God began to move and the wounds of the crucifixion appeared on the child Jesus and began to bleed. Falling to the floor the man cried out 'O Lady, who has done this?' The image replied, 'You and all who sin crucify my son anew with your sins.' The sinner, full of remorse and contrition, repents, is forgiven and receives a great 'unexpected joy', thus the title for the icon. The lettered panel at lower left is inscribed in Old Church Slavonic with the beginning of the tale, Chelovyek nyekiy bezzakonen imyeyashe pravilo povsednevoe ko presvvyatoye bogoroditsye molitisya slovesem arkangelskago tsyelovaniya…' (A certain lawless man had a daily rule to pray to the most Holy Mother of God with the words of the Archangel Gabriel’s greeting…) Near the head of the kneeling man his words are inscribed 'Oh Lady who has done this?' And written in a strip extending from the mouth of the Virgin is her reply. The title if this icon is inscribed in gilt letters at the top border. In an original state of preservation retaining the original varnish coat. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5cm).
