A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE HOLY VISAGE, SOUTHWESTERN RUSSIA, CIRCA 1850. In this icon the face of Christ is seen as it was miraculously transferred to a cloth, thereby being an image 'Not Made By Hands'-its common title. The cloth is held by two angels displayed in the upper corners and the borders depict the saints Florus and Laurus. The inscription along the upper margin identifies the subject as the, NERUKOTVORRENUIY (Not-by-Hands-Made) Image of Our Lord. Overlaid with a silver plated repoussed riza with applied gilded halo. 17.5 inches x 14.5 inches (44.5 x 36.5cm). Literature: For a very similar icon see: V. I. Baidin, N.A. Goncharova and O.P. Gubkin, Nevyansk Icon, Ekaterinburg, The Urals University Press, 1997, page 175, image #148, attributed to South-western regions of Russia and dated to the first half of the 19th century.
