A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION AND FEASTS, 18TH CENTURY. A finely painted icon clearly influenced by western sacred art. At the center a large and imposing image of the Resurrected Christ, triumphant over death rising out of an empty tomb attended by an angel and with Roman soldiers looking on. In the background the three Myhr-Bearing Women approach. The central image surrounded by images of the 12 great church feasts. Each figure painted with extensive shading and the garments with gilt highlights. Icons such as the offered lot exhibiting the distinctive pallet of blue, red and white together with extensive gilt highlighting is often referred to as the St. Petersburg style as similar icons often display inscriptions denoting their St. Petersburg origins. They are often of high quality, like the offered lot, and seemed to be quite popular with a certain segment of the western thinking aristocratic community at the time. 28 inches x 22.75 inches (71 x 58 cm)
