A PERSONAL RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. SPIRIDON, 19TH CENTURY. Executed in the traditional Old Style, Spiridon is depicted as Bishop, delivering a blessing and holding a book of Gospels. The upper border painted with the Mandylion. The condensed and abbreviated Old Church Slavonic inscription flanking the halo identifies him as The Holy Spiridon Wonder-Worker of Tremithon. Spiridon was born and died on Cyprus. He was present at the first Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325, and was a vocal opponent of Arianism. 4.25 inches x 3.6 inches (11cmx 9cm).
